Call for Papers
Universities Studying Slavery in South Carolina
2023 Spring Symposium
February 2-4, 2023
Florence, South Carolina
Hosted by Francis Marion University
We welcome presentations that address historical and/or contemporary issues dealing with race and inequity. With this being the first of these symposia, there will not be a theme. However, topics may include, but are not limited to efforts to research college and university histories related to slavery; partnerships developed between academics and neighboring communities; initiatives underway on campuses to educate students and institutional communities.
We invite faculty, staff, students (undergraduate and graduate), and community members to share and discuss their work through panels or individual papers. For students, we offer opportunities to provide a paper or poster presentation in a professional forum.
Panel proposal submissions must include a 125-word maximum panel description that includes a proposed title as well as individual 250-word maximum paper proposals and 100-word maximum biographies for each participant. Panels will be 75 minutes in length, with 15 of those minutes for q&a.
Individual paper and poster proposal submissions should provide a 250-word proposal and a 100-word maximum biography. Presentations should be 15-20 minutes in length. Posters should be 48" wide x 36" high.
Proposals are due by December 1, 2022. Please submit them to fmuuss@fmarion.edu. This symposium is open to non-member and member USS schools.
