Call for Papers: Sacred Recitation and Ritual in Digital Worlds

The Yale Journal of Music & Religion will publish a special issue on sacred recitation in digital worlds guest edited by Anne K. Rasmussen. We invite submissions documenting and interpreting routes of transmission and access, ritual communities, novel uses of media and technologies, and transformations of religious identities through the intersections of voice, scripture, and sacred text in digital worlds. As sacred recitation is performed and received in spatially and temporally dispersed spaces, this special issue seeks to understand the relationships of religion, media, and technology in their contemporary and emergent forms. Relevant topics include learning and listening; the consolidation of media and recitation styles; responses to the Covid pandemic; digital methods in historical research; diaspora and displacement; institutions, traditions, and identities; religious adaptations of digital technologies; and religious publics and politics.

Deadline for submissions: January 15, 2023 at https://elischolar.library.yale.edu/yjmr/
