The Benjamin L. Hooks Institue for Social Change, at the University of Memphis is accepting nominations for its 2022 Hooks National Book Award. The annual award recognizes a non-fiction book that best furthers the understanding of the Civil Rights Movement and its legacy. Books focusing on past or current civil rights and social justice issues, leaders, policies, laws, etc. are eligible. To be considered for the 2022 award, books must have a first-published date in 2022. Revised editions of previously published books are not eligible. A panel of judges, representing various higher education disciplines, reviews the nominations and selects the winning book.
An award of $1,000 is presented for the award in 2023 at the University of Memphis. The winner must attend the event to accept the award and present a lecture about the book.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: Submit a nomination letter by USPS or email to Ms. Rorie Trammel. The nomination should include the book name and contact information for the publisher and book author. The book should be mailed to Ms. Trammel, postmarked no later than December 31, 2022. Contact information is as follows:
