Co-Directors Christian Peterson and Tracy Busch would like to invite high school history teachers from across the country to apply for a spot in our NEH summer institute titled “War, Revolution, and Empire: U.S.-Russian/Soviet Relations, 1776-present,” which will be held at Ferris State University from 6-30 July 2016.

This institute starts from the assumption that the subject of U.S.-Russian relations should concern every educator in the United States. The steps that Americans and Russians have taken to create prosperous domestic orders and influence the conduct of “foreign” peoples have had a profound impact on global history, especially during the past one hundred years. Beyond helping the participants learn more about this subject, it will play close attention to what specific steps Russians and Americans can take to improve the relationship between their two nations. Such an undertaking may seem quixotic in light of the recent strains in U.S.-Russian relations. However, the wide array of problems that the world now faces makes such a task more relevant than ever.

The Co-Directors  have structured this institute in an interdisciplinary manner to facilitate “deep” historical learning. During the seminar sessions, we will discuss a wide array of primary documents and fundamental works that cover important aspects of U.S.-Russian/Soviet relations. The eight guest scholars participating in this institute will share their knowledge of Russian/Soviet history and/or extensive experience working with Russians at all levels of government. To gain a better understanding of how history was lived and experienced by Russians, Ukrainians, and other national groups, we will participate in a wide variety of cultural activities such as the viewing of movies, a Russian folk artist workshop, and a field trip to Chicago.

If selected, participants will receive stipends of $3,300 to pay for the expenses of attending this institute. Besides using this stipend to cover travel expenses, they can use it to purchase the best on-campus housing at Ferris State at a reduced rate and reasonably priced Ferris meal plans (vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options available).  They can also use it to secure items like fresh linens and pay for easily-accessible laundry services.
