Call for papers for a special issue of Theoria: A Journal of Social and Political Theory

'Turner and his Times'

In January 1978, South African philosopher Rick Turner was assassinated at his home by an unknown gunman. This traumatic event, while important in itself, was also a reflection of the current state of a burgeoning struggle by people from all walks of life against the system of apartheid, a system which, just a few months before, had already brought an end to the life of Turner's friend, Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko, who died in police custody, and which was meeting student and worker protests countrywide with even more bullets.

Theoria is planning a special commemorative issue on Turner's life and work, with a particular focus on his context and his times, the people, events, ideas and debates that shaped and were shaped by him and others at that stage in the struggle against apartheid (c. the 1960s through to the 1980s).

The Editors will be pleased to consider any contributions to this issue, ideally in the form of a 2000- to 3000-word paper on Turner and his times. As a journal of social and political theory, Theoria would naturally want to encourage theoretically-informed accounts of Turner's works and ideas (particularly but not only The Eye of the Needle), as well as reflections on the dominant theoretical positions and debates of the times (such as Biko, Sartre, Althusser, EP Thompson and others), and the broader context of the liberation struggle, Black Consciousness, the nascent trade union movement, student politics, and the state of the South African left, both then and now.

Personal reflections will also be welcomed, but must be fully contextualised so as to accommodate Theoria's non-South African readership.

Please let the editors know on or before the 1st of March if you wish to contribute a paper. Submissions will be due by the 31st of August 2016. The issue is provisionally scheduled for publication in the first half of 2017.

All submissions must adhere to Theoria's housestyle and must be uploaded onto its online submission system. All the relevant information can be found here: http://berghahnonline.com/ojs/index.php/th/index.
