The Power of Entertainment: music, arts and healing in Pandemics

Editor: Poonam Bala

In understanding the history of disease and pandemics, music and arts have played an important role in healing while they have also been an enabling factor in spiritual bonding.  They have also played an important role in social cohesion which in turn shapes individual identity (ies) across cultures. The aim of this volume is to understand the significance of cultures in healing and the connections made thus, both of which are crucial in highlighting the indispensability of social and cultural aspects in pandemic/disease situations.

The proposed volume will be based on interdisciplinary themes, contributions from historians, sociologists, anthropologists, musicologists, and other scholars in arts and humanities.

Chapter contributions are invited on the following themes, but not limited to these: Music in times of pandemics, Music and performing arts in history, Social cohesion and performances across cultures, musicology and disease.

Abstracts of 200 words and a short bio may please be sent to Poonam Bala at

Deadline for Abstracts: 10 October 2022

Complete Chapter contributions of 6500 - 7000 words  will be due by 1 February 2023
