The Virtual Congress on Gender Studies: Appearances of Violence, co-organized by Karadeniz Technical Universitys Womens Studies Application and Research CentreAltınbaş University Gender and Womens Studies Research Centre TOKAMER TurkeyATINER GreeceCESRAN International, and Karadeniz Technical University Centre for Strategic Research, aims to explore the issues and challenges that have arisen as a result of the wars and conflicts that surround the world, through the lenses of gender studies.

While all kinds of violence appear as a social problem all over the world, it is clearly seen that women and children are the most affected by this situation on daily basis.  Today this has become even more visible as women and children suffer from countless conflicts. Apart from the various types of violence that face in conflicts, most civilian casualties are women and children, and they frequently outnumber combatants. They are also more likely to become refugees or face internal displacement. Even though the war in Ukraine has brought the issue to the attention of wider groups of people,  currently there are many other cases that need a closer look from a gender perspective.

As this year’s Congress on Gender Studies considers it a responsibility to discuss the issue of gender-based violence in conflict in these turbulent days, the topics to be discussed in the conference are not limited to that. Gender-based violence; is any form of violence that a person is subjected to because of his or her sex or gender identity. Physical violence is the first thing that comes to mind when violence is mentioned, but non-physical forms of violence are as common as physical violence and negatively affect the physical and mental integrity of the person. For this reason, examining all kinds of violence is extremely important in terms of gender studies.

In this line, the CGS congress aims to provide a forum for researchers, academics, practitioners, students, and educators to discuss issues linked to gender studies from a violence perspective. Theoretical, empirical, conceptual, experimental, descriptive, and constructive studies with a focus on gender are invited to highlight the issues, challenges, and opportunities that have developed as a result of the violence.
