Sponsored Panels

The Toronto Renaissance and Reformation Colloquium solicits abstracts for a series of up to four panels on Crime and Violence in the Early Modern World. Abstracts are welcomed from a variety of geographic and disciplinary perspectives, as we aim for a comparative and bridge-building series of discussions.  We welcome papers dealing with both victims and perpetrators, with attention to gender, religion, race, and class, and aim to explore both urban and rural crime in colonial and transnational settings.  We plan to publish a selection of these papers in a volume on early modern crime for a reputable publisher.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Everyday conflict and conflict resolution
  • Judicial apparatuses in early modern states / cities / territories
  • Gender-based violence and crime
  • Spatial patterns of crime and violence
  • Representations of crime and violence in art and literature
  • Microhistories of violence and crime
  • Property crimes / Petty crime
  • Wartime crimes and extra-military violence
  • Interpersonal violence
  • Definitions of crime and violence

Please submit abstracts of 150 words to Colin Rose (crose@brocku.ca) and Nicholas Terpstra (nicholas.terpstra@utoronto.ca). Submitters should also be sure to complete their profiles, including CV and current affiliations, on the RSA submissions system. If you are new to the RSA, please include in your submission your current affiliation so that organizers can add you to the RSA database. You will then be contacted by RSA to complete your profile.

We would appreciate receiving submissions by August 1, 2022 in order to ensure a smooth submission process to RSA by August 15th.
