Dear all,

I would like to invite you to submit an abstract for the 2016 Graduate Conference at Florida International University.

Call for Papers

The 16th Annual Conference of the Department of History Graduate Student Association

Miami, FL, April 1, 2016

Florida International University’s Department of History Graduate Student Association (DOHGSA) is pleased to announce our 16th annual graduate student conference.

“Beyond the Nation-State: Transnational Approaches to History” will feature a mixed format that includes panels and workshops.  We seek papers, based on original research, from Ph.D. and M.A. students that highlight the interplay and exchange of ideas, people, institutions, and technologies across national boundaries. There are no geographic or chronological restrictions. We wish to encourage a diverse group of participants to present their work and we are interested in papers that employ a variety of disciplinary or methodological approaches to history. Special consideration will be given to proposals that address Transnational History.

The keynote speaker for this conference will be Geraldo L. Cadava, professor of history at Northwestern University. Dr. Cadava’s research focuses on the U.S.-Mexico borderlands and Latino populations. His first monograph, Standing on Common Ground: The Making of a Sunbelt Borderland (Harvard University Press, Fall 2013), won the 2014 Frederick Jackson Turner Award from the Organization of American Historians. His current work, titled The Roots of Latino Conservatism: Empire, Capitalism, and Culture from 1810 to 2010, touches on the evolution of conservatism among Latinos from the age of Latin American independence through the rise of political figures such as Marco Rubio.

All proposals must be submitted by January 20, 2016.

Paper Proposals

Please limit your proposal to a 300 word abstract. This proposal should include a working title and a brief description of the topic, including a clear thesis statement. Please include a current curriculum vitae with each application.  We welcome submissions for individual papers and for panels.  Presenters who require audio-visual support should indicate as much in their application.  Please indicate whether you are interested in participating in a panel or a workshop.  For the two workshop sessions, papers will be posted for reading two weeks prior to the conference.

Travel Grants

Through a recruitment grant from the University Graduate School, we are able to offer a limited number of travel grants to support students in M.A. programs outside FIU who are presenting papers.  (Due to restrictions from our funding source, only Master’s level students can be considered for travel funds). Travel grants can cover airfare to Miami for the conference, and local accommodations with FIU students will be provided upon request. Please indicate in a separate letter if you wish to be considered for a Conference Travel Grant.
