NIAS invites Researchers, Artists, Writers and Journalists to participate in its 2nd international conference in the domain ‘Studies of Belonging’. Following the success of our first conference held in 2021, we aim to help move the field forwards by holding our next conference on the theme of ‘Belonging and Mobility’ 19-21 April, 2023.

The conference will be structured around five ‘spheres’ where, we think, important narratives and practices of belonging are being negotiated and rendered (im)mobile. For each of the spheres, we will look to unpack their ‘immobile’ default as well as to investigate what it would bring to rethink the work of belonging which people, and other species, undertake as fundamentally related to modalities and infrastructures of mobility. Each work presented during the conference should aim to locate itself within one of the following spheres:

The Body Politic  *  Belonging as / at Work  *  Dwelling / Home-ing

(Re)making Public Space  * Ecologies of Belonging

For more information about the conference theme and its spheres please take a look at the attached PDF, or visit the conference website here:

There are four options for participation:

  • Full Session Proposal, a panel to consist of 4 individual presentations
  • Individual Presentation
  • Lighting Papers, short Pecha Kucha-like presentations
  • Artistic Presentations, Experiments, or Performances

Please consider sharing this CfP among your (inter)national network. If you are interested in participating please see the submission guidelines on the conference website. Submission deadline: 30 June 2022.

We look forward to receiving your proposal and welcoming you online or in Amsterdam next year.
