Past Wrongs, Future Choices Postdoctoral Fellowship in Nikkei History

 University of Victoria

The Past Wrongs, Future Choices (PWFC) partnership invites applicants for a 3-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Victoria, Canada ($45,450/year, CAD).

PWFC is dedicated to transforming scholarly and public understandings of the abrogation of the rights of Nikkei civilians in allied countries across the globe in the 1940s. The successful postdoctoral fellow will join an international team of scholars to author and facilitate research aimed at producing an integrated analysis of Nikkei dispossession, internment/incarceration, and expulsion. At present, we lack summative analyses of this important example of transnational injustice and have impoverished explanations of its local variations. PWFC will reveal its place in a global history that has pressing relevance for an international community facing shared challenges today. Learn more about the PWFC project here

Through the networks of a multi-sector international partnership, PWFC scholars will contribute directly to museum exhibitions and teacher resources on four continents to promote civic learning and democratic deliberation on a global scale.

We encourage applications from scholars of any nationality who hold a PhD granted in the last 5 years (2017 or later). Specialists in Nikkei experience prior to or after the 1940s are welcome, with a preference for expertise on the events of the 1940s, their antecedents, or their legacies. Specialists with expertise on Australia, Brazil, Canada, or the United States (the main sites of PWFC research) will receive priority.

Applicants are encouraged to consider how their own existing program of research might fit into, and be enriched by, connection to and involvement in international and collaborative writing projects in association with PWFC.

Applicants are asked to submit:

  • A statement of interest
  • An academic curriculum vitae
  • And an article/chapter-length writing sample

These materials should be accompanied by:

  • Three academic letters of reference, sent directly by the referees

All materials should be sent by email to Jordan Stanger-Ross, Project Director, Past Wrongs, Future Choices: jstross@uvic.ca by 4:00 pm PDT Monday, June 27, 2022. Any questions can also be directed to Dr. Stanger-Ross.
