The Dublin Seminar for New England Folklife is pleased to announce that its 2022 conference, “Tools and Toolmaking in New England,” will take place at Historic Deerfield on Friday, June 24, and Saturday, June 25.

This will be a hybrid conference, and seating in the conference space will be limited and distanced for safety. 

The conference program includes:

  • a keynote address by Prof. Steve D. Lubar on “Tool Stories”
  • five panel sessions of three papers apiece on Friday afternoon and Saturday covering many aspects of tools in New England culture, from 17th-century Squakheag artifacts, pincushions, and Masonic symbols to whaling and early industrialization
  • a close-up demonstration of shoemaking by hand
  • opportunities to visit Historic Deerfield, the Hadley Farm Museum, and the Museum of Our Industrial Heritage
  • book sales
  • time for discussion with fellow attendees
