The Asia Research Institute (ARI) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications from graduate students currently enrolled in a fulltime Master’s or PhD programs at a university in the United States for consideration for the award of Asian Graduate Student Fellowship. These fellowships are made possible under the auspices of the Luce Foundation and are meant for Humanities or Social Sciences graduate students working on Southeast Asian topics. The fellowship will allow the recipient to be based at NUS for an ‘in residence fellowship’ for a period of eight (8) weeks. The aim is to enable graduate students to make full use of the wide range of resources held in the libraries of NUS and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. Candidates are expected to be actively involved in the Asian Graduate Student Fellowship Program. Candidates are expected to make a presentation on their work at the “Singapore Graduate Forum on Southeast Asian Studies” at the end of the Fellowship program. The fellowship will commence on 23 May 2016.

  3. A one-time round trip travel subsidy by the most economical and direct route (on a reimbursement basis) upon being accepted for the fellowship
  4. Access to library and computer resources on campus. You can look forward to excellent library and internet computer facilities at NUS’s main library (http://www.lib.nus.edu.sg), the library at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) (http://www.iseas.edu.sg/library) and the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library at the National Library (http://www.nlb.gov.sg) to facilitate your research for the dissertation. NUS’ main library has 2 million volumes covering all topics while ISEAS’s library has 200,000 on Southeast Asian topics, half of which are in Southeast Asian languages.
  5. 3 working days of official leave
  6. Exposure to seminars by various experts in the field
  7. Opportunities for cross-cultural learning especially where it concerns SE Asian languages. The Fellowship Program will be joined by over thirty students from the Asian region working on SE Asian related topics
  8. A mentor/advisor will be appointed based on candidate’s research topic
  9. The Training Employment Pass and Visa will be arranged for by ARI

APPLICATION PROCESS

Interested applicants are invited to e-mail:

  2. A 2-page outline of your research proposal in English. The 2-page research proposal must include the following details:
    a) whether the data collection or fieldwork stage of the research has already been completed;
    b) how the fellowship will contribute to the research;
    c) the types of sources to be consulted in Singapore;
    d) proposed work plan during the fellowship.
  3. Two letters of reference, one of which is from your principal thesis supervisor must be sent confidentially to the same e-mail address by the deadline of 23 January 2016.

CRITERIA

  1. Eligible candidates must have completed their fieldwork or primary data gathering by the time the Fellowship starts in May 2016.
  2. Eligible candidates will be required to participate in the Academic Writing Program and provide English language support to Asian students participating in the program.
  3. Eligible candidates must be enrolled in a in a fulltime Master’s or PhD program at a university in the United States.
