The International Connections Committee (ICC) of the Appalachian Studies Association (ASA) invites you to a free Zoom conversation about the impacts of the war in Ukraine on Carpathian Mountain communities on 14 May 2022, 12:00-1:30 EDT (registration required).
This conversation builds on years of scholarly and personal connections between Appalachian and Carpathian Mountain communities, many of which have been fostered through ASA. Beginning in the early 2000s, ASA welcomed Ukrainian–and then Romanian–scholars, students, and community members to Appalachia to present their research on the Carpathian Mountains at our annual Appalachian studies conferences. In 2013 and 2017, scholars, students, and community members from the Appalachian Mountains traveled to Ukraine to participate in Carpathian/Appalachian conferences and visit Carpathian Mountain communities. In 2015 and 2019, those Appalachian constituencies traveled to Romania to do the same. A fifth Appalachian/Carpathian conference is planned for October 2-7, 2022 in Brașov and Măgura, Romania.
The ICC hosted a Zoom conversation between Appalachian and Carpathian Mountain communities on February 26, 2022 immediately after the start of the war. The ICC also organized a panel discussion on the war and its impacts on Carpathian Mountain communities at the 2022 Appalachian Studies Conference in March.
During this second Zoom conversation, we will consider ways that the Russian war in Ukraine continues to impact Carpathian Mountain communities and mountain people, both within and outside Ukraine. In preparation for the conversation, please consider reading
- "In Ukraine’s Carpathian Mountains, tens of thousands find refuge from war" by Max Bearak (Washington Post, 16 March 2022)
- "Ukrainian artists find sanctuary in residencies in the Carpathian mountains" by Sophia Kishkovsky (The Art Newspaper, 26 April 2022)
and consider watching
- Thousands of Ukrainians Flee to the Carpathian Mountains for Safety (NBC News, 22 March 2022).
Register in advance (required) for this free Zoom meeting. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting on 14 May 2022 from 12:00-1:30 EDT.
