Early Career Fellowship in Borderlands Histories

The Department of History at the University of Texas at Austin seeks to appoint in Fall 2022 two early career fellows in borderland histories to complement and strengthen its investments in scholarship on race, ethnicity, digital and public history. The search is part of the university’s Provost’s Early Career Program. We encourage applications from historians and public or digital history practitioners with expertise in legal history, gender and sexuality, migration studies or immigration policy, cultural history, Indigenous/Native American history, and/or comparative and relational studies of borderlands.

The borderlands fellows will join an energetic community of other incoming fellows training in different departments across the university.  In History, we have designed a 2-year program of robust mentorship intended to make an assistant tenure-track or professional career successful. Fellows will be encouraged to apply for a tenure-track position.

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in History or a related interdisciplinary field such as American Studies or Ethnic Studies (as long as the scholar’s approach is primarily historical) adopting a borderlands lens to any region of the world, or hold a terminal professional degree in Archival, Curatorial, Museum, Curriculum Development, or Journalism with public history or digital humanities expertise.

Review of applications will begin 5 pm on May 2, 2022. Applications will be accepted until positions are filled. Please note the different requirements for the academic track and public digital history track.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in university-wide trainings run through the Provost’s Office to develop skills to build a unique writing, publishing, and teaching portfolio.

  • Participate in department and university intellectual communities and programs concerning borderlands studies.

  • Work with faculty mentors and build a network of emerging scholars to advance career growth in research, teaching, public humanities, and scholarship.

  • Teach one course per academic year.

Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. in History or a related interdisciplinary field such as American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Asian Studies (as long as the scholar’s approach is primarily historical) or a terminal professional degree Archival, Curatorial, Museum, Curriculum Development, or Journalism with public history or digital humanities expertise. Ph.D. or terminal professional degree must have been received no more than three years prior to the start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

Expertise in legal history, gender and sexuality, migration studies or immigration policy, cultural history, Indigenous/Native American history, and/or comparative and relational studies of borderlands.

Salary Range: 

$60,000
