CHIMBORAZO SUMMER SCHOOL (LAGLOBAL-FLACSO)
BEYOND HUMBOLDT AND DARWIN: DECOLONIZING NATURAL HISTORY
June 3-11, 2022
Quito, Ecuador
The CHIMBORAZO SUMMER SCHOOL offers advanced training for professionals, graduate students, postdocs, and junior scholars in Global and Connected History. The 2022 edition of the Summer School will focus on the connected history of Natural History, with critical emphasis on the New World, and in particular the Andes. Going beyond canonical figures of European science, in particular Humboldt, La Condamine and Darwin, and the associated concepts of the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, and Evolution, the course emphasizes the ‘mestizo’ or connected production and circulation of objects of knowledge and modes of knowing of New World origin. The School includes fascinating field excursions to historical and natural sites of great interest, including La Mitad del Mundo, the Chimborazo Volcano and, optionally, the Galapagos Islands. The School is led by distinguished international professors Mark Thurner (University of London, FLACSO) and Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra (University of Texas, FLACSO).
