ISA Human Rights Awards Now Accepting Submissions

Dear H-Human Rights Subscribers,


I am writing with to announce that the HR section awards competitions for the upcoming year are now open. We offer awards in the following categories, and encourage members to self-nominate or to nominate other excellent works in the field of human rights. Please go to the “Awards List” page of the ISA HR Section’s website for details on the adjudicating committees and how to submit nominations. All award nominations are due by June 30, 2021; except the Chandra Sriram Global South and the LGBTQA and Human Rights Global South Scholars travel awards, for which applications are due October 15, 2021.

HR Best Book Award
The Human Rights Section’s Best Book Award recognizes an outstanding monograph in the field of human rights published within the past two years. Nominated books will be evaluated for excellence and impact in terms of germaneness, substance, originality, and timeliness. (Nomination deadline: June 30, 2021)

HR Best Paper Award
This award, sponsored by the Human Rights Section (HR), will be given to the best paper presented at the ISA Annual Convention by a faculty member (not restricted to rank) or professional or activist. (Nomination deadline: June 30, 2021)

Human Rights Section - Lynne Rienner Publishers Award for Best Dissertation
The purpose of this award is to recognize the best dissertation in the field of human rights defended within two years of the award nomination deadline. Dissertations that ask timely and important questions and deploy innovative methods to answer those questions, as well as dissertations that engage directly with ongoing debates within the human rights field are particularly invited for consideration. (Nomination deadline: June 30, 2021)

Steven C. Poe Best Graduate Student Paper Award
Graduate students are invited to participate in the Steven C. Poe Graduate Student Paper Competition sponsored by the Human Rights Section (HR) of the ISA. (Nomination deadline: June 30, 2021)

Chandra Sriram Human Rights Section Global South Travel Award
The Human Rights Section of ISA invites applications for the annual Chandra Sriram Human Rights Section Global South Travel Award. This is a competitive grant based on merit and need intended to assist scholars with accepted papers at the upcoming year’s Annual Convention with expenses related to attending the convention. Applicants must be members of the Human Rights Section and be working or studying at an academic or policy institution in the Global South. (Nomination deadline: October 15, 2021)


LGBTQA and Human Rights Global South Scholars Travel Award
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer & Allies Caucus (LGBTQA) together with the Human Rights (HR) Section invite applications for the annual LGBTQA and HR Global South Scholars Travel Award. This is a competitive grant based on merit and need intended to assist scholars with accepted papers at the upcoming year’s Annual Convention with expenses related to attending the convention. Applicants must be scholars located in the global south, whose work contributes to scholarship on human rights and/or LGBTQ+ politics, with a primary preference for scholars who identify as LGBTQ+. (Nomination deadline: October 15, 2021)
