The Ghetto Fighters' House is honored to host James E. Young who will give a talk on:
“The Stages of Memory against the Grain: Reflections on Memorial Art, Loss, and the Spaces Between”
In this time of cancel culture and re-evaluation of memorialization, Professor Young's talk is as relevant as ever. His talk will focus on prominent memorial sites that have been considered "against the grain", such as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.; the Denkmal for Europe’s Murdered Jews in Berlin and other German counter-monuments; the 9/11 Memorial in New York City; and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, in Montgomery, Alabama.
James E. Young is Distinguished University Professor of English and Judaic Studies Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he has taught since 1988, and Founding Director of the Institute for Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies at UMass Amherst.
The event will take place on ZOOM and is free to the public.
