Aaron Copland, Communism, Cold War

David Chambers Discussion

The PostClassical Ensemble (PCE) of Washington, DC, recently aired a new episode on its WWFM series PostClassical called "Copland and the Cold War," with performances that include composer Aaron Copland's 1934 workers song "Into the Streets May First" as well as a reenactment of Copland's hearing before Senator Joseph McCarthy during the Cold War of the 1950s.

PCE Musical director Joseph Horowitz has added further discussion on Arts Journal.

To his discussion, I have added comments (footnotes, essentially) with links to Copland's workers song (actual musical score) in the New Masses, his review of a performance, and an accompanying article (all from 1934), along with comments about New Masses editors (including Whittaker Chambers).
