Web: The Forgotten World of Communist Bookstores

In my early 20's I used to visit the Communist Book Store in San Francisco frequently to debate the women who staffed it. Many years later, I wound up renting an apartment in the corner building where that bookstore was located (on McAllister and Leavenworth in San Francisco).

Good article, but I was a little disappointed it did not mention John Stanford's All Points of View CP bookstore in San Antonio, which was raided by local sheriff's deputies without a warrant in December 1963, very suspiciously soon after the JFK assassination. The Warren Commission tried to link Stanford with the assassination with no success. Stanford took his case all the way up to the US Supreme Court and won.

In my town, Portland OR, the John Reed Bookstore soldiered on until 1993 (see Portland Red Guide,(2nd ed, pp. 195-6).
