Synopsis:  Online since 1995, this site is widely referenced by universities, museums, art historians, Buddhist practitioners, and lay people from around the world. The site's focus is medieval Japanese religious art, primarily Buddhist, but it also catalogs art from Shintō, Shugendō, Taoist, and other traditions. The site is constantly updated. It currently (as of April 2016) contains 400+ deities and 4,000+ annotated photos of statuary from Kamakura, Nara, Kyoto, and elsewhere in Japan. Use the site's search box to search in English, Japanese, Chinese, or Korean for deities. Created and maintained by independent researcher Mark Schumacher, who has lived in Kamakura since 1993.
