I am pleased to share a new release this week.
The Taming of the Demons
From the Epic of Gesar of Ling
Translated by Jane Hawes, David Shapiro, and Lama Chonam
Foreword by Dudjom Sangye Pema Shepa Rinpoche and H.H. the Fourteenth Dalai Lama
This is a complete translation of Volume 4 of the collection compiled by Mipham Rinpoche. Volumes 1-3 were published as The Epic of Gesar of Ling (http://shmb.la/gesar-ling). Following the first volume’s account of Gesar’s miraculous birth and ascension to the throne, this second volume can easily be read without having read the first. We find the warrior king Gesar, accompanied by his entourage and wife. In battle after battle, he slays with his magical feats all those who stand in the way of the true Dharma.
"Not just for scholars and established aficionados of the Gesar epic, this translation is exciting and eminently accessible. I was loath to stop reading, and you will be too."
—Natasha Mikles, author of The Power of Genres and the Project of Secularization: Publishing the Gesar Epic in Contemporary China
"On the ultimate level, Gesar is none other than the great master Padmasambhava—intentionally manifesting as the magical display of a warrior being. Among the many editions of this great hero’s stories of enlightened activities comes this English translation of The Taming of the Demons. I rejoice from the bottom of my heart that this is now made available."
—Chakung Jigme Wangdrak, founder of The Abhaya Fellowship
