The School of Religious Studies and the Department of East Asian Studies at McGill University, (Montreal, Canada) invite applications for a joint tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of Chinese Buddhism. We seek to appoint a dynamic scholar capable of expanding the existing Asian Religions program at McGill through a research expertise and teaching competence in modern Chinese Buddhism (post-imperial) and pre-modern Buddhist traditions (pre-Qing). In addition to a focus on Buddhism, the candidate should be proficient in the overall religious context of China and East Asia and be able to teach an introductory course in East Asian Religions.

The ideal candidate will possess broad supervisory competence in China’s religious traditions and fluency in both Mandarin and Classical Chinese. Additional research competence in a second East Asian language or one of the other Buddhist canonical languages is highly desired. The ability to teach courses that cover the Mahayana Buddhist traditions and their interface with other religious traditions such as Daoism or Confucianism is crucial, as is the ability to supervise graduate theses in the wider fields of East Asian Studies and Buddhism.
