With much sadness I report to you the death, on March 3, of Professor Jacques Gernet at the age of ninety-six. Professor Gernet was well-known to many of us as one of the leading Sinologists of the twentieth century and a pioneer in the study of the social history of Chinese Buddhism. He held the posts of Director of Studies at the École Pratique des Hautes Études and subsequently the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales from 1955 to 1976, and was chair of Chinese Social and Intellectual History at the Collège de France from 1975 until his retirement in 1992.
His funeral and cremation will be held on Thursday March 8 at the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
