We write with great sadness to report to you that Dr. Linda Penkower passed away on February 27. A pioneer in the study of medieval Chinese and Japanese Buddhist history, she leaves a legacy of unbounded intellectual generosity. She is remembered by her students as a formidable reader who would always have a challenging comment and a compassionate mentor who never failed to demonstrate her unwavering faith in them just as she never shied away from showing the pride she took in even the smallest of their accomplishments. She is remembered as a trustworthy, effective, supportive, and enthusiastic mentor.
In the midst of her protracted fight with cancer, she showed admirable courage and continued to work with tireless dedication for her students and for colleagues as chair of the Religious Studies Department at the University of Pittsburgh. Ill health could not stop her from continually working to help others. We will greatly miss her.
