"Overview of Sinitic Buddhism in Xixia and Liao"

The talk includes a general introduction to the Buddhist traditions in the Liao and Xixia, and will touch upon the issues of textual transmission between the two states. The framework of exchange included texts of Huayan and Chan Buddhism, and probably some aspects of the Ci’en school of Sinitic Buddhism. The author will attempt to analyze the network of textual exchange which included the Tangut and Kitan states, and probably involved areas further south.
About the speaker:
Kirill Solonin received a PhD (Doctor of Science) from St. Petersburg University in 2007. He has worked in St. Petersburg University, Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, RAS, Fujen Catholic University, Foguang University, and is currently a professor at the Institute of Chinese Classics, Renmin University of China. Research fields include Buddhist history of East Asia (10-13th century, Huayan teaching, Tangut language and linguistics, Tangut Buddhism, Sino-Tibetan Buddhism etc.) Main publications include: Xixia Hanchuan Fojiao wenxian yanjiu 西夏漢傳佛教文獻研究 (Lanzhou: Gansu Wenhua, 2022, in print); Dapeng zhanchi: Zangchuan xinjiu zhou zai Xixia de chuanbo 大鵬展翅： 藏傳新舊咒在西夏的傳播 （Shanghai: Shanghai guji chubanshe, 2022, in print）as well as numerous articles available at https://ruc.academia.edu/soloinkij.
