CFP "Cultures of Change" USD Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies Conference 2017
The University of South Dakota Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies program will be hosting its biennial research conference in Vermillion, SD on March 23-24, 2017. This year's theme is Cultures of Change.
Battles over the regulation of women’s health care. #BlackLivesMatter. The Supreme Court decision recognizing gay marriage. Mass shootings by angry young men. Laws restricting bathroom use for transgender individuals. Gender equity and women’s rights issues have been increasingly, publicly contested, creating the potential for unprecedented social change. Inspired by these new and continuing issues, this year’s conference offers a forum to explore Cultures of Change.
The University of South Dakota's Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program invites individuals across disciplines to present their work on topics that grapple with nature of to structural and cultural change relating to gender politics and the rights and representation of marginalized groups, both today and historically.
In addition to academic papers, we welcome posters, performances of creative writing, music, dance, presentation of visual arts and roundtable or workshop sessions. We are especially interested in proposals from undergraduate and graduate students. Students whose papers are accepted will have the opportunity to submit complete papers for the student paper competition.
Individual (Paper, Performance, Poster) - Submit an abstract of 300-500 words detailing the content and scope of presentation. Include paper/project title, your name, affiliation/position and contact information. Individual presentations of academic/artistic work should not exceed 15 minutes.
Panel or Roundtable Session - Submit an abstract of 750 words that provides overview of the panel or roundtable topic and offers a brief summary of each paper (if a panel). Include session title, title of each paper/project, and the name, affiliation/position and contact information of each presenter/panelist. Panel sessions should feature 3-4 presenters delivering 15 minute presentations and a session chair. Roundtable sessions should include a moderator and 3-5 presenters, not to exceed 90 minutes.
We also welcome proposals for exhibits from groups dedicated to social and political change. Please submit an abstract of 300-500 words as above.
Deadline for submissions is December 1, 2016. Submit proposals to wgss@usd.edu.
Proposals should be submitted both as an electronic email attachment and included in the body of the email.
