Dear Colleagues,
We are seeking presenters to join our panel on education and indigenous strategies of resistance in colonial North Africa, for the upcoming FCHS conference in Seattle. Our aim is to explore in comparative perspective the ways in which education acted as a central site of political contestation and cultural negotiation between the French colonial state and the indigenous populations of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. How did indigenous resistance to colonial education shape notions of cultural authenticity? What were the range of cultural resistance strategies employed by colonial subjects in North Africa, and how did these impact the objectives and practices of French colonial education? We especially invite proposals from scholars focusing on either colonial education in Tunisia, Muslim girls’ education, Berber education, missionary education, etc. Please email us directly at or
