CZECHOSLOVAK STUDIES GROUP CALL FOR PAPERS
Reimagining ‘The Heart of Europe’
Inaugural Conference of the UK Czechoslovak Studies Network, Friday 17th September 2021, University of Oxford (online and in- person pending COVID-19 restrictions)
The conference aims to be a space for new voices and identify fruitful areas of new research focusing on the Czech and Slovak region, in any of its past and present shapes, alongside all its peoples and cultures within and beyond its borders.
The day will bring together researchers on the region to discuss current projects, establish connections, and spotlight areas for collaboration. We welcome proposals for 20-minute papers from researchers of all disciplines within the humanities, arts, and social sciences. Potential topics could include, but are not limited to, the following overlapping topics:
Insiders & Outsiders - this topic might encompass ideas of self-perception, class, gender, diaspora, emigration and otherness
Space & Place - this could include research on national space, ethnic tensions, border tensions, landscape, cityscapes, and urban bodies
Temporality – research may focus on regional time culture, ideas of modernity, tradition, and folk culture
Power – the concept of nationalism, relationship with central powers, notions of the centre and periphery
All proposals should include a title, an abstract of no more than 250 words, and a brief speaker biography of no more than 150 words. They should be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com by no later than 8th August 2021. You will know the outcome of your submission by the 15th August 2021. All other attendees may sign up for the conference by 10th September 2021.
We look forward to your papers.
