New paper available: Maria Manuscript.

Gerard Cheshire's picture

To: Medieval History Group.

With the usual apologies for any accidental cross-posting.

Dear Listers,

Paper No. 7, in the Plant Series, for the Maria Manuscript (MS408) is now available to freely download:

The plant species is Campanula rapunculus, and the paper reveals the Medieval etymologies for the terms 'rampion' and 'rapunzel', which are two of its vernacular European names. The plant was used as a 'cure-all'. Much of the manuscript relates to medicines, illness and death, as this was a Medieval preoccupation.

Kindest regards,

Dr. Gerard Cheshire.
