Please join the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium (HREC) for Forbidden Photos, a presentation of the online Holodomor Photo Directory.
The online directory makes accessible more than one hundred photographs from the time of the Holodomor, most of them taken surreptitiously by foreigners in Ukraine in 1932-33.
Project Lead Lana Babij will reflect on the genesis of the project and issues in authenticating the photos;
Anastasia Leshchyshyn and Daria Glazkova will comment on their research into rare and haunting images by a local photographer that document his family’s experience of the Famine;
Samara Pearce will share her thoughts on the legacy of her great-grandfather, Alexander Wienerberger, and its impact on her as an artist; and
Professor Nick Kupensky will discuss the context of disbelief and denial in which the photos were taken.
The Photo Directory is an ongoing project and the result of cooperation between HREC, Lana Babij, and OurDigitalWorld, which collaborates with libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, and community groups to create sustainable digital collections.
