Portnov, Andrii. Dnipro: An Entangled History of a European City. Ukrainian Studies. Academic Studies Press, 2022.

This first English-language synthesis of the history of Dnipro (until 2016 Dnipropetrovsk, until 1926 Katerynoslav) locates the city in a broader regional, national, and transnational context and explores the interaction between global processes and everyday routines of urban life. The history of a place (throughout its history called ‘new Athens’, ‘Ukrainian Manchester’, ‘the Brezhnev`s capital’ and ‘the heart of Ukraine’) is seen through the prism of key threads in the modern history of Europe: the imperial colonization and industrialization, the war and the revolution in the borderlands, the everyday life and mythology of a Soviet closed city, and the transformations of post-Soviet Ukraine. Designed as a critical entangled history of the multicultural space, the book looks for a new analytical language to overcome the traps of both national and imperial history-writing.

Warum und wogegen führt Russland in der Ukraine Krieg? Und wie erklärt sich die Stärke des ukrainischen Widerstands, von dem nicht nur Wladimir Putin überrascht wurde, sondern auch viele westliche Beobachter und Beobachterinnen? Die Osteuropa-Expertin Gwendolyn Sasse analysiert die Hintergründe des russischen Angriffs, der schon 2014 begann, und fragt, welche Folgen er hat - für Russland, für die Ukraine, aber auch für uns im Westen.
Am 24. Februar 2022 griff Russland die gesamte Ukraine an, gegen die es schon seit 2014 Krieg führte. Zunächst erfolgten Luftschläge, dann bewegten sich Panzerkolonnen auf Kiew und andere ukrainische Städte zu. Millionen Menschen flohen, viele wurden verwundet oder getötet. Wie konnte es dazu kommen? Warum entschloss sich Putin zu diesem Schritt?  Gwendolyn Sasse seziert die Faktoren, die zu dieser verhängnisvollen Entscheidung führten und zeigt, wie sehr die eigenständige Entwicklung der Ukraine das russische Machtsystem bedrohte. Dabei räumt sie mit zahlreichen Fehlwahrnehmungen auf, die gerade auch in Deutschland das Bild der Ukraine lange verzerrt haben. So entsteht eine erhellende historische und politische Einordnung des russischen Überfalls, der die westlichen Staaten und die internationale Ordnung vor enorme Herausforderungen stellt.

W tej groteskowej opowieści perspektywa ludzka miesza się z optyką zwierząt, a znany świat, powoli znika w oparach absurdu.
Czy stanowisko antropocentryczne jest jedynym uprawnionym? Kto ma prawo decydować o losie innych żywych stworzeń? Do czego zdolny jest człowiek i czy są jakieś granice? Zwierzęta, które zjadły swoich ludzi to sztuka o tym, co to znaczy umrzeć, być człowiekiem, przeżyć wojnę. To absurdalna, surrealistyczna, czarna komedia o konflikcie zbrojnym w Donbasie i antropocentryzmie.
Sasza i Misza, dwaj ukraińscy żołnierze, przeczekują bombardowanie w zrujnowanym, klaustrofobicznym wnętrzu w towarzystwie mówiących ludzkim głosem wypchanych psów, charta i pudla, oraz akwarium pełnego gadających rybek. Prowadzą dość absurdalne rozmowy, z których dowiadujemy się, że Wujo zakopał na pamiątkę w ogródku Trzech Ruskich, że kończy się pitna woda i że na podwórku leży zastrzelony Chłopczyn z rowerkiem, którego należałoby wnieść do środka i wypreparować jak psy. Rozmowy toczą się przy herbacie osładzanej wyglądającą jak cukier trutką, a całą sytuację komentuje zgryźliwie samowłączające się radio. Z czasem zwierzęta – a przewija się ich przez dramat sporo, od krów i knurów po gigantyczną, acz małomówną papugę – przejmują kontrolę nad tym mikroświatem. Eksperymentalny w formie i treści dramat przejmuje grozą i bawi, a jej bohaterowie – w swym oczekiwaniu nie wiadomo na co, najpewniej na własna zagładę – kojarzą się nieodparcie z Beckettowskimi Vladimirem i Estragonem.

Zayarnyuk, Andriy, and Ostap Sereda. The Intellectual Foundations of Modern Ukraine: The Nineteenth Century.Routledge, 2023.

This is the first synthetic book-length study in English of the Ukrainian nation-building during the "long" nineteenth century.

The narrative follows the evolution of the Ukrainian intellectuals and their ideas from the Age of Enlightenment at the end of the eighteenth century and to the era of Positivist science and social reform at the beginning of the twentieth century. The book focuses on the intellectuals, since in the case of Ukrainians—the nineteenth-century epitome of stateless and overwhelmingly plebeian people—the intellectuals played a pivotal role in defining the Ukrainian national project. The central theme is intellectuals’ engagement not only with each other, but also with the people and land they represented. Views of Ukraine from the imperial and "world" capitals, larger intellectual currents, and geopolitical games are not neglected. Nevertheless, its main focus is on the Ukrainian intellectuals’ visions of Ukraine’s past, present, and future, their responses to the challenges of modernity, their ideals, agendas, and programmes.

The Intellectual Foundations of Modern Ukraine is the ideal resource for upper-level undergraduates, postgraduates, and scholars interested in cultural anthorpology, political science, political philosophy, and the history of modern Ukraine.

Maria-Anna Holod’s memoirs tell of the times from the death of her father, Rev. Mykola Prokopovych, when she was ten years old, to her full maturity as a married woman and mother in Canada (Edmonton and Toronto).  Interwar and World War II Galicia with its Polish, Soviet and Nazi occupations was a place of rapid political change, and social displacement and instability. Maria Holod describes life of the parish house in a village against the background of other priestly, related families.  Lviv is made visible through the eyes of a young girl – half orphaned, who must make her way independently but within a network of relatives, and friends from the gymnasium of the Basilian Sisters in Lviv, and from her studies.  She tells of her meeting Roman Holod and of their love during the war: personal experiences and details of daily life happening during the war.  Then, after a short time in Poland and southwestern Germany, the family, now with two daughters, Renata and Charita, moves to Canada.

Зарембо, Катерина. Схід українського сонця. Історія Донеччини і Луганщини початку ХХІ століття. Львів: Човен, 2022.

Ця книжка – про українські спільноти Донеччини та Луганщини, які діяли від початку 2000-х і до російського вторгнення 2014 року й існування яких російсько-радянський міф про Донбас заперечував. Про культурні простори, студентські середовища, українське село, розмаїті релігії. Про тих, хто хотів жити не в міфологізованому минулому, а у вільній демократичній Україні.

Ці спільноти були голосами нових, непострадянських Донеччини та Луганщини, вбудованих у всеукраїнський контекст; пробудженням приспаного (пригнобленого, винищеного, закатованого) українства.

Мета книжки – зробити відомою бодай частину їхньої історії.

Куліш, Пантелеймон. Крашанка Полякам і Русинам На Великдень 1882 Року. Edited by Лукаш Адамський. Centrum Dialogu im. Juliusza Mieroszewskiego. Мистецтво, 2022.

Це академічне видання маловідомого публіцистичного твору Пантелеймона Куліша «Крашанка полякам і русинам на Великдень 1882 року». Бажаючи налагодити співпрацю між галицькими поляками та русинами (українцями), видатний український письменник вирішив публічно розправитися з багатьма міфами, глибоко вкоріненими в історичній пам’яті обох народів. У «Крашанці» він представив свій погляд на причини цих історичних суперечок, які зародилися часом ще у пізньому середньовіччі та інтерпретація яких у XIX столітті сильно розділяла поляків і русинів. Зокрема, письменник різко розкритикував діяльність козацтва та єзуїтів, а також засуджував дослідників і публіцистів, які поширювали міфологізовану історію та трактували минуле без належної джерельної критики. Публікації передує вступ, у якому пояснено обставини написання «Крашанки», і стаття, що розкриває витки інтелектуального та політичного життя Пантелеймона Куліша, а також вплив на нього поляків і польської культури.
