Oldest Union soldiers to see combat

Hello, I am working with a genealogist whose 60-year-old ancestor apparently enlisted in an Illinois regiment, and saw combat. Could anyone suggest a recent monograph or reference work that could provide some context for the Union military's enlistment policies, or studies demographic diversity of soldiers?
