The SCWH Early Career Committee’s Mentorship Program is looking for new participants for 2023. For the past few years, the Mentorship Program has paired recent PhDs and early career scholars with more experienced historians outside their university who have advised mentees on portfolios, helped with grant recommendations, given feedback on writing, and even weighed in on workplace issues. Mentors and mentees should have a background or interest in the Civil War Era (this can include the wider nineteenth-century, slavery and African-American studies, public history, memory studies, or similar topics related to the broader Civil War Era).
We are seeking applications:
1. from experienced scholars, including those not in traditional university positions, who are willing to serve as mentors for early career scholars
2. from early career scholars who would like to be paired with a mentor OR who are willing to serve as mentors for graduate students
3. from graduate students who would like to be paired with an early career scholar
Mentors are expected to contact their mentees within the first month of the program and meet with their mentees at least 1-2 times in a semester.
Those who are interested in serving as either mentors or mentees should fill out the appropriate Google Form below by December 16, 2022. If you are already in the Mentorship Program and would like to continue, please fill out a new form. If you are an early career scholar who would like to be both mentor and mentee, please fill out both. We will begin pairing mentors/mentees beginning December 30, 2022.
