Nationalism and the Global Public Sphere
Nationalism has long been and remains one of the most powerful forces in the world. H-Nationalism is devoted to tracking nationalism's continued importance around the globe through our regular series of "Weekend Reading" posts and through original contributions from our members. If you have thoughts, reflections, or concerns about recent events and discourse, please consider contacting us about sharing your thoughts. You can do so by emailing David Prior, one of our Advisory Board Members, at prior@mail.h-net.msu.edu. Here are some suggestions about how members can contribute.
Invoking (and Rebuking) the Nation: Do you have an analysis of the ways in which the concept of the nation, ethnic group, race, or country are being invoked or rebuked by artists, political leaders, or pundits? A post discussing this subject and analyzing recent texts, broadcasts, or statements can be an excellent way to call attention to the state of nationalism in the world today. If you have ideas to share on this topic, please contact us. We recommend thinking of a post of between 300 and 1,000 words.
Nationalism in the News: Are there recent events that you believe call out for greater analysis by nationalism scholars? Perhaps there has been social unrest somewhere in the world that has escaped our attention? Is nationalism shaping a particular set of diplomatic quarrels that we should know about? A post calling attention to recent events and explaining how they shape or are shaped by nationalism can be an excellent way to bring scholarly scrutiny to current events. If you have thoughts to share, please consider contacting us. We recommend thinking of a post between 300 and 1,000 words.
