On 4 March 2019, Pope Francis announced the opening of the archives of the pontificate of Pope Pius XII (1939-1958) within the Vatican Archives. Apart from the polarised debate on Pope Pius XII’s role during the World War II and the Holocaust, the Vatican Archives should reveal a much broader narrative as the period of this papacy was also at the centre of a shifting global Christianity and its rapid indigenisation.
