The MA in Modern China Studies at the Institute of Chinese Studies, University of Freiburg (Germany), is a two-year, English-language program with an emphasis on conducting original research. Knowledge of German is not required. The program is especially strong in modern Chinese history, society, and culture (twentieth century to the present). Coursework focuses on honing research skills and methods, improving language facilities through source readings or translation classes, and an integrated semester abroad. Students also have the opportunity to work for one of the Institute's on-going research projects related to modern Chinese history.
