Call for Applications: MA in Modern China Studies, University of Freiburg (Germany)

The MA in Modern China Studies at the Institute of Chinese Studies, University of Freiburg (Germany), is a two-year, English-language graduate program with an emphasis on conducting original research. The program is especially strong in modern Chinese history, society, and culture (twentieth century to the present). Coursework focuses on honing research skills and methods, improving language facilities through source readings or translation classes, and an integrated semester abroad, usually at a Chinese university for non-native Chinese speakers and at other European universities for Chinese native-speakers (we have long-running ERASMUS partnerships with the University of Oslo and the University of Stockholm). Students also have the opportunity to work for one of the Institute's on-going research projects related to modern Chinese history. Students are taught by and work with an international group of scholars (https://www.sinologie.uni-freiburg.de/Mitarbeiterinnen) and have access to a robust research infrastructure that includes local collections (such as the Maoist Legacy project's offline collection) and the CrossAsia system (https://crossasia.org/en/), which grants many German universities access to important online Chinese databases useful for conducting research. More information about the MA program and how to apply can be found on the website: https://www.sinologie.uni-freiburg.de/studium/master. 

Tuition fees: EU students pay 155 euros per semester and non-EU students 1500 euros per semester. (Non-EU students may be eligible for a tuition waiver following the first semester.) These fees largely subsidize the cost of local transport and meals in university cafeterias.   

Freiburg is a large university town located in the southwest corner of Germany on the edge of the beautiful Black Forest, next to France and Switzerland, and is well known throughout Germany as the sunniest place in the country. The university has a sizable international student body and the surrounding area is a haven for outdoors and sports enthusiasts.
