Die Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German Special Section

Sustainability and Community Engagement in German Studies

Die Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German is soliciting abstracts for a special section in the fall 2021 issue titled “Sustainability and Community Engagement in German Studies." 

Interest in the intersection of German Studies and environmental sustainability has recently led to a significant number of Environmental Humanities publications and curriculum development projects. Meanwhile, many institutions are encouraging faculty to develop service-learning projects as part of a larger push to implement high-impact practices. Yet engaged pedagogy and service learning involve challenges far different from those present in more traditional scholarly and pedagogical work in German Studies. As many communities work toward sustainability goals, how might German departments build a sustainability-focused curriculum that engages with local stakeholders?

This special section of Die Unterrichtspraxis seeks to bring together perspectives on sustainability-focused curriculum development, engaged scholarship, interdisciplinary intercultural learning, and community partnerships in German Studies.

Possible topics include:

  • Sustainability-focused language pedagogy, interdisciplinary learning in German Studies, and outdoor, place-based immersive curriculum development
  • Community partnership development, engaged scholarship, and theories of community
  • Internships and study abroad programs focused on sustainability
  • Ecocriticism, environmental storytelling, and material histories
  • Intersections of environment, power, and identities

Timeline: 

  • December 1, 2020: 250-word abstract and short CV due to the curators (see emails below) 
  • December 15, 2020: Contributors notified 
  • April 15, 2021: Manuscripts due 
  • July 15, 2021: Revised version due 
  • November 2021: Publication in the fall issue of 2021 (54.2)
