Call for Papers: Affektive Verstörungen: Christian Kracht's oeuvre

Since the appearance of his novel Faserland in 1995, Christian Kracht has been the subject of much debate. Despite being a controversial subject at times, Kracht has enjoyed success in the literary sphere and won several prestigious awards. Kracht’s work spans numerous genres and confronts a variety of themes from alternative histories to colonial fantasies. One critic even referred to Kracht as a “peddler of right-wing ideas” and others have implied that his works exhibit tendencies toward a fascination with totalitarian aesthetics. With the recent publication of Eurotrash, there is renewed interest in Kracht and his literary figures. As such, we are thrilled to announce a panel dealing with this author and some themes related to his work. Of particular interest to us are elements of intersectionality in Kracht’s work. We invite contributions that include - but are not necessarily limited to - papers on the following themes:
- Notions of class, privilege, consumption, and economic and material themes
- Representations and configurations of identity
- Kracht’s reception in the contemporary Literaturbetrieb
- Colonial and imperial fantasies
- Alternative histories
- Travel and Transportation
- Totalitarian Aesthetics
- Authorship, autobiography, and autofiction
- Violence and power dynamics
Abstracts should be between 200-300 words in English or German. Please submit abstracts before March 5, 2022.
