Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE)

Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth Hotel — Montréal, Québec, Canada

July 30- August 2, 2015

Conference Theme: “Je me souviens (I Remember)”

The Black Theatre Association (BTA), a focus group of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE), seeks essay submissions for its 14th Annual Debut Panel.

BTA will hold a joint session with the American Theatre and Drama Society (ATDS) and the Latino/a Focus Group (LFG) in order to foster communication across our interrelated disciplines.

BTA encourages all graduate students and assistant professors working on black theatre and performance studies who have never presented at ATHE or a national conference to apply. Papers may consider any aspect of black dramatic criticism, theatre history, plays, playwrights, performers, directors, designers, or any other topics related to black theatre and/or performance.

The highest quality papers will be selected by our distinguished panel of theatre/performance studies scholar judges. The selected essays will receive specific feedback from judges to help authors strengthen their work for the national conference presentation.

Please include your name, paper title, affiliation and contact information on the first page of your essay.  Essays will be evaluated for originality, the quality of writing and research, and critical/theoretical sophistication. Accepted panelists will present their papers at the ATHE conference, July 30 – August 2, 2015 in Montréal, Québec, Canada.

All essay submissions should be 8 to 10 pages in length (20 mins), typed, double-spaced (including block quotes), and use either Chicago or MLA style citations.

***Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, April 15, 2015***

Receipt of your submission will be confirmed via email, and you will be informed of the judges' decisions on or near May 1, 2015.

Please e-mail your completed essay submission as an MSWord attachment to Khalid Y. Long, BTA Debut Panel Coordinator, at longky@umd.edu. Please type “BTA Debut Panel” in the subject heading.
