17. Sanders increases relations with unions, including national AFT’s Weingarten (Morning Shift)
SANDERS MAKES INROADS WITH LABOR: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is seeking to address some of the weaknesses that plagued him in 2016 ahead of a potential bid in 2020, reports POLITICO's Gabriel Debenedetti. High on the list is improving his relationships with organized labor, . "Sanders has been working closely with figures who are close to the party establishment he's long railed against, like American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten," Debenedetti writes.
Weingarten, a prominent Clinton-backer during the 2016 election, joined Sanders at several events in recent months, Debenedetti reports. "The pair have worked together on Puerto Rico recovery efforts and on a community college unionization drive in Vermont, and Weingarten backed Sanders' signature health care proposal this fall."
