H-Genocide is looking to recruit a new team of editors who can take the helm and develop its potential as a scholarly forum. This team will have the power to shape their field of study through H-Net’s multifaceted publishing platform, the H-Net Commons, which operates on an open access model. A little more information about our parent non-profit, H-Net. At H-Net, academics volunteer to help run topically-defined networks like this one. H-Net relies on its volunteers to ensure that all content—from reviews, to queries, to CfPs, to announcements—is relevant to scholars and of suitable tone. H-Net has an elected Council, composed of fellow editors, and a Home Office with paid academic staff who together provide oversight and support. H-Net does not conduct advertising or otherwise harness its networks for revenue. These features make H-Net networks inclusive, open, moderate forums that are shielded from spam, trolling, and other negative behaviors associated with the internet. We rely on academics like you to make that possible. Our most active networks have thousands of subscribers and receive tens of thousands of web visits every year. A temporarily unstaffed network like this one already has subscribers, existing veins of content, and a built-in content management platform that gives editors the freedom to create.
This network could particularly use either or both of the following:
1) A network editor or group of network editors to manage its moderation queue, ensuring that new messages and announcements get vetted and then, when appropriate, published and delivered to subscribers. This work is important and largely routine and can usually be handled in an hour or two per week. 2) A network chair who can carve out a vision for the network moving forward and build a team of contributors to help take full advantage of our platform, the H-Net Commons. This platform brings with it the ability to circulate email notifications, publish reviews, develop blog and podcast series, host timelines and GIS-index maps, and much more. The network chair position is not essential to a well-functioning network, but they can work wonders. Chairs serve one-year terms that are subject to a re-approval process. The latter should especially include a tentative plan to recruit other editors to support the network and its mission, including through your own professional connections and/or through open Calls for Editors published on the network’s main page.
