CFP: Masculinity and Slavery, SHEAR 2018

I’m interested in organizing a panel on slavery and masculinity for the 2018 SHEAR conference, to be held in Cleveland on July 18-22.  Specifically, I seek 3 papers (and a commenter) addressing the ways in which bondsmen experienced and defined manhood in and through their interaction with enslaved women – for example, through marriage, courtship, father-daughter relationships, other kin relationships, friendships, labor, resistance, leisure pursuits, or religious activities.

Anyone doing work in this area and interested in participating on this panel should contact me off list at  The deadline for submitting panel proposals is December 1, though I’d like to pull this panel together before mid-November.
