Columbia Global Centers | Istanbul - Call for Proposals 2022

Columbia University’s Global Center in Istanbul is delighted to announce that it continues the Voices of Emerging Scholars Program in Fall 2022 and Spring 2023.

Starting as a Covid-19 project, the Voices of Emerging Scholars created a platform, which presented new research in Ottoman-Turkish studies to a wide network of scholars and students worldwide. The resulting papers are published in The Journal of Ottoman and Turkish Studies. Please see the journal’s Summer 2021 and Winter 2021 issues and webinar videos.

This academic year, the webinars will be coordinated by Zeynep Çelik, Sakıp Sabancı Visiting Professor, and A. Tunç Şen, Assistant Professor of History, and cover a broader chronological span from the early modern to the late Ottoman-early Republican periods.

We invite advanced Ph.D. students and early-career researchers who have received their Ph.D. degrees after January 2018 to submit abstracts (200 words) for the program.

Each webinar will have a focused topic. There will be three presentations (15 minutes each), followed by comments from a discussant and a Q&A session with the audience.

The resulting papers will be published in a special section of the Journal of Ottoman and Turkish Studies.

We are now inviting proposals that would pertain to the following overarching topics:

• Wars, Diplomacy, and Empires
• Legal History
• Ethnicity and Identity Politics
• Immigration
• Intellectual History
• Manuscript Studies
• Visual Culture
• History of Science, Medicine, Technology, and Occult
• Life at Home
• Environmental History
• Urban Spaces, Institutions, and Infrastructure
• Labor History

The deadline for submission is August 31, 2022. The accepted papers will be announced in mid-September.

Please note that we will continue with pending papers from last year in September and newly admitted papers will be presented starting from November 2022.
