The Scientific-Spiritual World(s): An Anthropology of Science and Religion in India
Based on his recently published book, Science and Religion in India: Beyond Disenchantment (London: Routledge, 2022), Thomas' talk will address some of the questions and concerns in anthropology of science and religion, and ethnography of scientific laboratories. This talk will discuss the ways in which scientists described a distinct identity of religious life; while being religious, the scientists tried to maintain a distinct identity from non-scientists and lay believers. The maintenance of this distinction enabled them to position themselves as 'experts' and assume a dominant position in society. They argue that their belief in God was rational and hence different from other devotees.
