The Florida Historical Society invites submissions for its 2019 Annual Meeting and Symposium to be held May 16-18, 2019, at the Radisson Resort at the Port in Cape Canaveral, Florida. In acknowledgement of the fiftieth anniversary of the Apollo 11 first lunar landing and its return to earth, this year’s theme is “Countdown to History: Ice Age to the Space Age.”  

We welcome proposals from faculty, grad students, undergraduate students, museum and archival personnel as well as from independent scholars. While the theme of this year’s conference will celebrate the first lunar landing, papers, panels and roundtable discussions on all areas of Florida history, humanities, and/or archaeology as well as related scholarship on Florida, the South, the Borderlands, and/or the Caribbean will be considered. A committee of Society members will judge the proposed papers/sessions on their value as scholarship or other forms of useful contributions to Florida and cognate studies. Presentations should follow the Statement on Standards of Professional Conduct by the American Historical Association.

Submission guidelines:

* INDIVIDUAL PAPER (15-20 minutes): send a title, 150-word abstract, and one-page vitae.

* THEME PANEL: send a title and brief (150 word) theme description, 150-word abstract for each paper, one-page vitae for each panel member, and suggested discussant.

* ROUND TABLE FORUMS OR DISCUSSIONS: send a title and brief (150 word) topic description, list of the participants, and moderator/discussant, with vita.

The Society will also sponsor its usual awards for 2019. Submissions should be made by January 15, 2019 to ensure they are included in the judging. For award categories and information about how to submit an entry, please visit:

In addition, the Society is offering a limited number of graduate student awards to present their scholarship at the annual meeting and symposium. Up to four awards for registration for the entire conference (value $150+) will be given to enrolled students at an accredited university or college.
