The Varieties of Democracy research network (V-Dem,, in partnership with the Centre for Research on Governance and Development (CPGD,, invites submissions for paper presentations at a one-day conference for scholars on the theme of democracy to be held on 24 May 2017 in Maputo, Mozambique.

The aim of the conference is to present and discuss the V-Dem data with local scholars from Lusophone Africa and/or Southern Africa. It also aims to engage local scholars to present analyses on themes related to democracy, elections, human rights, and the role of legislatures in strengthening democracy in the region.

It is under this scope that the conference welcomes submissions from scholars from a range of disciplines conducting research on democracy, elections, human rights and the role of political institutions (such as the legislature, executive, judiciary, political parties, media, civil society, school, etc.) in strengthening democracy in Lusophone Africa and/or Southern Africa.

Submissions are encouraged for works that employ quantitative methodology, qualitative methodology or a combination of both.

To submit a proposal, send a paper title, an abstract of up to 500 words and your contact details to by March 31, 2017.

Decisions on submissions will be made by mid-April. Accepted participants will be expected to present their paper at the conference.
