 AFRICA IN THE WORLD

In the post-Covid-19 pandemic context (Varin 2021) and with the war in Ukraine already lasting for more than a year, we are witnessing (geo)political and societal changes unprecedented since World War II. In a multipolar world, with state, regional and international actors as well as non-state actors (e.g. the Wagner Group) with their own frameworks of action, justifications and strategies, Africa is a continent that plays a major role as “world power of the future” (Agenda 2063). These are some of the main reasons why the theme of the second edition of the Interdisciplinary Congress on African Studies is “Africa in the World“.

Encouraging an interdisciplinary approach (political science, international relations, sociology, history, anthropology, etc., as well as humanities and arts), the conference aims to bring together specialists in African studies ready to discuss recent political changes in Africa, based on two main axes, each followed by some possible points for reflection:

1. The Cold War and what we already call “the New Cold War”

• From the perspective of political history: developments of socialisms in Africa (F. Blum 2021); relations between Africa (part of the “Global South”) and the countries of the Eastern bloc during the Global Cold War (Westad 2017)
• From the perspective of international relations: perspectives of/on the African continent in the context of the New/Second Cold War; issues involved in Africa’s relations with international, regional, state or non-state actors (security, political etc.).

2. Postcolonialism and the exchanges from/with Africa

• Identities and political imaginations in the context of postcolonialism (Mbembe 2002); identities for African diasporic communities.

  Contributions can be in English or in French. Depending on the proposals received, separate sessions in French and English are envisaged. We encourage case studies and micro-studies that can subsequently open up comparative perspectives and transnational research projects.

Contributors are invited to complete THIS FORM – including a short presentation of the author, the title of the proposal and a short abstract of approximately 300 words – by September 1, 2023. The authors will be notified by email regarding the acceptance or the rejection of the proposal by September 20, 2023. The conference program will be launched by October 1, 2023.

L’AFRIQUE DANS LE MONDE

Dans le contexte postpandémie Covid-19 (Varin 2021) et avec la guerre en Ukraine qui dure déjà depuis plus d’un an, nous assistons à des mutations (géo)politiques et sociétales sans précédent depuis la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Dans un monde multipolaire, avec des acteurs étatiques, régionaux ainsi qu’internationaux mais aussi des acteurs non-étatiques (p.ex. le groupe Wagner) ayant leurs propres cadres d’action, justifications et stratégies, l’Afrique est un continent qui joue un rôle majeur, « puissance mondiale de l’avenir » (l’Agenda 2063). Voilà quelques raisons pour retenir pour cette deuxième édition du Congrès interdisciplinaire des études africaines la thématique « L’Afrique dans le monde ».

A partir d’une approche interdisciplinaire (science politique, relations internationales, sociologie, histoire, anthropologie ou autres sciences sociales, sans oublier la perspective des arts), cette conférence internationale vise à réunir des spécialistes des études africaines pour discuter des changements politiques récents en Afrique, à partir de deux grandes axes et quelques pistes de réflexion  :

1. La guerre froide et ce qu’on appelle la « nouvelle guerre froide »

• De la perspective de l’histoire politique : les évolutions des socialismes en Afrique (F. Blum 2021 ; les relations entre l’Afrique (partie du « Sud Global ») et les pays du bloc de l’Est durant la guerre froide globale (Westad 2017)

• De la perspective des relations internationale : les perspectives du continent africain dans le contexte de la nouvelle/seconde guerre froide » ; les enjeux (sécuritaires, politiques, etc.) des relations de l’Afrique avec des acteurs internationaux, régionaux, étatiques ou non-étatiques

2. Le postcolonialisme et les échanges de/avec l’Afrique

• Les identités et l’imaginaire politique dans le contexte de la postcolonie (Mbembe 2002) ; les identités des communautés diasporiques africaines

Les contributions peuvent être en anglais ou en français. En fonction des propositions reçues nous allons organiser des sessions distinctes en français et en anglais. Nous encourageons les études de cas et les micro-études qui puissent ouvrir par la suite la perspective comparative et des projets de recherche transnationaux.

Les contributeurs sont invités à compléter CE FORMULAIRE – comprenant une courte présentation de l’auteur, le titre de la proposition et un court résumé d’environ 300 mots – avant le 1er septembre 2023. Les auteurs seront notifiés par mail concernant l’acception ou le rejet de la proposition au plus tard le 20 septembre 2023. Le programme de la conférence sera communiqué jusqu’au 1er octobre 2023.
