The RSHHGG Lab is live!
The site is an interactive online index of nearly 100 years of the Revue de la Société Haïtienne d’Histoire, de Géographie et de Géologie, the periodical arm of Haiti’s oldest intellectual society that is still active today.
North Atlantic specialists of Haiti have long recognized the importance of the RSHHGG as a crucial repository of Haitian scholarly research. And yet it remains woefully underutilized in scholarly research outside of Haiti. But why? At least part of the problem is a rather mundane one: this key periodical is not indexed in library catalogs and thus remains opaque to most traditional searching practices.
Created in conjunction with the National Digital Initiatives at the Library of Congress and the Société Haïtienne d’Histoire de Géographie et de Géologie, the site aims to increase the impact of this important repository of scholarly research published in Haiti by facilitating the work of scholars of Haiti in the US, Haiti, and beyond.
Why the “lab”?
The project title gestures to the role of collaboration, experimentation, and sharing in the National Digital Initiatives’ Labs project, which will feature the RSHHGG Lab on its experiments site. The RSHHGG index will feature annotations from Haitian and non-Haitian scholars and researchers, while the data itself will be made available for further experimentation. “Lab” also because of the specific format of the Society’s publication, the revue: a space of exchange, confrontation, creation, and shared interests for scholars and researchers of Haiti.
How does it work?
The search bar queries a Zotero bibliography, which includes an entry for every article published in the journal.

Le Labo RSHHGG est maintenant actif !
Le site met en ligne un index interactif de presque 100 ans de la Revue de la Société Haïtienne d’Histoire, de Géographie et de Géologie, organe de la société savante la plus ancienne d’Haïti, encore en activité aujourd’hui.
Les chercheurs spécialistes internationaux reconnaissent depuis longtemps l’importance de la RSHHGG comme fonds incontournable de production savante haïtienne. Et pourtant la revue demeure sous-utilisée. Pourquoi? Une partie de la réponse est assez simple: ce périodique phare n’est pas indexé dans les catalogues de bibliothèques et donc reste opaque à nos pratiques de requête traditionnelles.
Créé conjointement par la National Digital Initiatives at the Library of Congress et la Société Haïtienne d’Histoire, de Géographie et de Géologie, le site vise à accroître l'impact de ce fonds important en facilitant le travail des chercheurs sur Haïti aux Etats-Unis, en Haïti, et ailleurs.
Pourquoi le “labo”?
L’intitulé du projet indique une collaboration, d’une expérimentation et d’un partage dans le projet de la National Digital Initiatives Labs qui va abriter le Labo RSHHGG sur son site. Les annotations de chercheurs haïtiens et non-haïtiens figureront dans l'index RHHGG, tandis que les données seront consacrées à d’autres expérimentations. C’est aussi un ‘’Labo’’ en raison de sa conformité avec le format de la revue de la Société: un espace d’échange, de confrontation, de création, et les intérêts partagés pour les professeurs et chercheurs d’Haïti.
Comment ça fonctionne?
La barre de recherche comporte une requête bibliographique Zotero qui donne un accès direct à la citation bibliographique de chaque article de la revue.
